Topsy-Turvy Innovation 2!

New Photo w Logos

A few weeks ago I did a blog post about how I was trying to find the topsy-turvy planters for my seedling tomato plants. There were none to be found at any of the big warehouse hardware and home supply stores. Finally one of the managers at Walmart gave me the key: just take an old planter and pop a hole through the bottom and make your own topsy-turvy. Luckily I had some old hanging baskets that I could use as an experiment to see if this would work with one of my tomato plants.

Fruit on the Vine

Last night while I was watering all of my tomato plants I noticed that the plant in the jerry-rigged topsy-turvy had a very small tomato on the vine. I was overjoyed to see this and the reason is that it showed my invention was actually working better than I had ever anticipated. Upon noticing this one tomato, I began to look at all of the branches on all of the other tomato plants in the topsy-turvy’s. Not one of the other tomato plants has a tomato on any of the branches. I’m not sure whether this has to do with the fact that this particular tomato hybrid grows faster than the others or if there are any other reasons why this particular plant would already have a tomato on it. I do think it’s pretty coincidental that the one plant that is in the innovated planter is the one that seems to be thriving and doing the best of all of my plants.

The plant analogy is a good one to compare to your business. Your business needs TLC, constant nurturing and influxes of knowledge which are akin to the plant food for the tomato plant. If you continually feed and water your business it will bear fruit at the end. The continued growth will only come about through nurturing and time investment to make sure that your message and word are heard clearly by the audience. I know from seeing this tomato that my business is on the upswing. I can feel the electricity and the vibration that is beginning to reverberate around what I am doing. I have noticed that all of my YouTube videos are getting more and more views. I am also noticing that my blog posts are getting more and more views than ever before. It’s just a matter of time before my business will explode successfully. The content I’m producing is the finest that I can create. I am very much looking forward to building a team for my Empower Network. I know that there are people out there who are looking for something different and could thrive in an opportunity like the Empower Network.

Can you re-plant and begin a journey?

I know that my success is dependent upon all of the steps that I take day in and day out. Those steps include but are not limited to: blogging, videos, guest blogging, hangouts, audio podcasts, educational readings and educational webinars and hangouts. I want to take my business to the next level and I feel that the time is right to build a team. See all of my contact information below and connect with me if you are willing to think differently and start a new adventure.  The information that I’m getting from within the Empower Network is golden and will help me in every aspect of my business going forward.

What choice will you make?

Emotions as Motivational Tools! Grief…

New Photo w Logos

There are some fundamental truths that are universal to everyone on this planet. We are all born, we all eat, and we all drink water. Another fundamental truth that we all must face is that we will all deal with the loss of loved ones along this journey called Life. It’s not something you can escape from. There is no way to pay your way out and no matter whom you are, rich or poor, you will have to grieve at some point during your life. This is what makes us human. This is what makes us know that we are alive. How you deal with this emotion is one of the puzzles wrapped within the enigma of the human experience.

The Choices

My own grief is deep. I have two choices:

1. I could retreat within myself and be consumed by self-doubt and motion paralysis. This would not be conducive to any constructive endeavor.

2. I can take all of these feelings, all of this sadness, all of this incredible angst, and channel it to mold and construct something that will be beneficial to me in the future and a living memorial for the loved one I lost.

Some of the most incredible artwork, sculptures, and musical compositions have been crafted by artists who were in the throes of deep sadness and melancholy for a loved one who had passed. The feelings will not subside quickly and time will be the only salve that will make the wound less painful but never gone. I know there are people out there like me, people who are hurting and are looking to channel their incredible hurt into something creative. I urge you to join with me and unleash your inner talents to create a financial structure that will be beneficial to you and your entire family going forward. If you can take your hurt, your sadness, and tap into the universal feelings and emotions that all human beings on this planet feel, you can move on and help yourself with the healing process.

Use your Inner Force to Create

I will never forget, nor do I want to ever forget, the happy times that I shared with Susan. As I said in one of my Facebook posts that was a direct quote from the Bard: “It is better to have loved and lost, then to have never loved at all.”  I know there are people out there who are hurting, and can easily understand the pain that I am feeling at this point. I ask you to join with me and channel and focus all of your emotions toward a different outcome. Together you and I can help each other and overcome our tragedies while building a bridge that will secure us financially in a future time.

My Condolences

Anyone out there who has suffered the loss of a loved one is in my thoughts and prayers at this very sad painful time. I know how you feel firsthand. If you can find it in some deep recess of your being to completely focus your attention you can channel all of this pain and hurt and have it do an incredible amount of good for you and your family in the long run.

Business Tip: Topsy-Turvy Innovation

Tomato Crops

Every year for the past 5 to 7 years I have been planting plants on my front stoop and also in pots that I have put on my window-box ledge in front of my house. About five years ago I decided that I was going to try something different. I put some I-hooks into the ceiling of my porch because I wanted to hang Topsy-Turvy’s to grow some tomato plants.

Now being the frugal guy that I am, I decided that buying new Topsy-Turvy’s every year was an economic disaster and a new way of thinking needed to come out. I decided that the Topsy-Turvy’s could be reused if I clean them out and then insert new foam insulation to surround the plant base that holds the tomato plant in the Topsy-Turvy hole. So far I’ve gotten some good yields of tomatoes from the Topsy-Turvy’s that grow in front of my house.

The 3-Turvy Monty

After last year’s growing season I had three Topsy-Turvy’s that were ready for this year. One Topsy-Turvy from last year had to be retired because it was starting to decay and have holes in it. Thus began the quest to find another Topsy-Turvy. Today I went out on my motorcycle and went to Home Depot, and then to Lowe’s, and then to Walmart, with absolutely no luck in finding Topsy-Turvy’s for sale. I know many of you are going to look at this post and think that it is purely nonsense, but I am coming to the nugget that will make this entire post worth your while.

Business Golden-Nugget

While I was at Walmart I had to wait for the information I was seeking. While I was talking with the woman at the checkout she decided that she needed to speak to a manager since she had not seen any Topsy-Turvy being sold so far this growing season. When the manager was available about five minutes later, he started to tell me that he had not seen any Topsy-Turvy’s in stock in the store so far this year. I started to feel defeated and downcast when he said to me,” why don’t you just take a planter and cut a hole in the bottom and then take a macramé pot holder and hang it from the hook?” This was shear genius. I’ve been so busy fixating on the Topsy-Turvy itself that I did not take the time to stop and use my mind to think about an answer, to think out of the box, to come up with an original idea that would have the same effect and end result. This is brilliant business sense. Not to mention the fact that he could’ve tried to sell me something else in the store, instead he threw me the nugget to disengage from the Topsy-Turvy fixation, and re-focus on a completely different answer to the problem.

Look at me, I’m stuck in a BOX

This will happen to you in your business as well. Sometimes you will have tunnel vision, and sometimes you will see things clearly enough to make a different and varied call. Always be open to the unexpected answer. My theory has always been: I don’t believe in out-of-the-box thinking, I believe in taking the box and kicking it down the street until you find the answer.

Simplicity is the act of Restful-Thought

Sometimes the easiest answers are the hardest ones to find.

The Entrepreneur Mentality

Don and Derek

The Book Kahuna and his Corgi, Derek!

I started to think about what has happened over the last year and a half and it gave me pause as I thought about the analogy of building a business. A business always starts with an idea. Whether that idea is how to build the best car, how to let people share photos on their computer, how to manufacture life-saving drugs, every business starts with an initial idea. That is the seedling. As the seedling starts to grow, more care and attention is needed to make sure that the business structure reaches an adult-status.

Growing

I just went out and bought some tomato plants which I will be planting this weekend. I plant tomato plants in topsy-turvy’s in the front of my house every year. I usually try to get a variety of different tomato plants so that I will have different tomatoes at many different points during the course of the summer. There is nothing better than taking a tomato that you’ve grown from your garden, cutting it up and putting it on your BLT. The pure enthusiasm that you have grown this tasty food product from a seedling or a small plant makes the final enjoyment of eating it that much more satisfying.

The exact same mindset can be said for your business. You as an individual start out with an idea. Whether this idea is tenable or not you don’t have any clear information. You are starting on the path that is new but will be utterly satisfying if you stay the course to your final destination. The problem is many people run into problems and deviate from their course or stop altogether. Stay on the course! As I’ve said before, we only have to look to WD-40, Formula 409 and Thomas Edison and his 10,000 tries at making a successful light-bulb. Look at your business as a plant. It needs water. It needs sunlight.  It needs love and some plant food.  It can grow and can give you everything you’ve ever wanted out of your life. Take the journey and make spaghetti sauce at the end, you will not regret it.

Using the Smile as a Tool in Business

Don and Derek

The Book Kahuna and his Corgi, Derek!

The Book Kahuna

I started to think recently about the best ways that you can get ahead and stay positive in the workplace. I remember reading many articles that talked about the most underutilized tool in the employee’s arsenal. That tool is the smile.
People want to be around those who are upbeat and happy as they do their jobs. Now it is not humanly possible to be happy at all times, but even if you can screw on a smile when times are not going all that well, this will be a help to you in the future. The dour countenance is not one that people want to be around for any length of time. The person who is always smiling, positive and goes the extra mile to get the job completed with a spring in their step: that is the person who gets noticed.

A Healthy Smile…
Smiling has health benefits as well. If you use those muscles in your face to keep smiling, then this also has a positive impact on your outlook. And as amazing as this may seem, Smiling has a great impact on those around you.
For all the publishing newbies out there: Just remember to smile and things will eventually fall into place. Make it a choice and choose to be happy!

Carnegie’s Classic: 75 + Years of Making Friends and Influencing People!

Don and Derek

The Book Kahuna and his Corgi, Derek!

The Book Kahuna

I just finished reading a classic title from 1936. Everything in this title is relevant to what is occurring in the business world today. The book I finished reading was Dale Carnegie’s:  How to Win Friends & Influence People.

You Can’t Beat a Classic

It’s always interesting to read a classic book. There are differences in sentence structure, style and many times there are words that grace the pages of changed and archaic meanings from times gone by. None of these occur to the reader when looking at this particular title. The pages are just as fresh and interesting today as they were for a Depression Era audience in 1936. Carnegie has painstakingly provided us with a roadmap of how to deal with people in any area of corporate America. He does this while preserving the inexorable pull of the individual toward maintaining ego and self. Most of the tenets in this book are about treating others with respect, dignity, and a mature attitude to look at a situation from the other side of the fence.

Listening is Always Best

In essence, many of the things that have been proposed in this book come down to just a fundamental listening to another person. Another angle would be to throw out all preconceived notions of a situation and to begin at a zero-sum balance before engaging in any dialogue. Carnegie himself has recommended that the first three sections of part one in the book could be a basis for any interactions in a corporate environment. The first three sections are titled:

  1. If You Want to Gather Honey Don’t Kick Over the Beehive
  2. The Big Secret of Dealing With People
  3. He Who Can Do This Has the Whole World With Him. He Who Cannot Walks a Lonely Way

Do Unto Others

This is by no means a religious book, but there are many shades of the New Testament in the statements and conjectures that Carnegie brings to life. There are images of doing unto others as you would have done unto yourself. There is the imagery of turning the other cheek when dealing with anger and frustration in any given corporate situation. There is the imagery of walking a mile in another man’s moccasins before giving an answer or making a statement. Also there is the imagery of not casting the first stone and being someone who listens and actually cares about the statements of individuals who bring some problem or issue to corporate attention.

Take the Pathway

In the world we live in everyone seems to shoot from the lip and ask questions later. Carnegie’s book is completely refreshing in that he is giving us a handbook for success that only deals with personal restraint. If you can master restraining yourself and give the full measure of your complete attention to another human being then you will be in command of all the necessary tools that Carnegie has outlined in this incredible detail of corporate communications and interactions. This book, along with Jeff Olson’s:  The Slight Edge, has really opened my eyes to what is necessary and important in dealing with other people in a business environment.

I Recommend…

For everyone who is new to the publishing industry, I recommend that you get a copy of this book from the public library, bookstore, or download it from Amazon and read it and then reread it. Everything you need to know about business interactions and corporate communications that will help you rise to the corner office are included in this groundbreaking, visionary title from Mr. Carnegie. It’s amazing to me that it took until 1936 for a book of this kind to actually be written. It is a testament to the man and author that Dale Carnegie was that 75 + years later we are still reading this book and implementing these important tenets.
