I was recently on a social media panel with Leslie Lane Peabody, Laurie Shin and Dennis Lund where we each gave about a 5 to 10 minute presentation on a different aspect of the social media tools that are available in your quiver. Now I always use that terminology that links to arrows and quiver because there is immediacy in the nature of what you need to do and when you need to do it (just as in hunting with bow and arrow).
Today I want to give a little information about the power of LinkedIn groups. In LinkedIn you are allowed to be a member of 50 different groups in your specific niche or any other interest that you have. Right now I am in 50 groups that specialize in various aspects of the publishing industry. I post discussions to all of these groups; I send articles via Forbes online, Publisher’s Weekly, Entrepreneur, and The New York Times. This is a way to build visibility among your peers that you are a pundit in your field. Always make comments on discussions in your particular groups. You will get to know the other people in the group and you will also show that you are someone who is knowledgeable in your field.
Make Your Own
Another aspect of LinkedIn groups that is very important: You can actually make your own group. Why does this help you as an entrepreneur and businessperson? There are many different things that you can do once you are the manager and founder of your own group. As you grow your connections, you can automatically invite all of your first-tier connections to be members of your group. Now why would this be important? It is important because once all of your first-tier connections and anyone else who wants to join your group are in your group; you have the ability to email all of them as the founder and manager of your particular group. This is almost akin to having a LinkedIn AWeber capture, because now you have the ability to communicate and get the word out on anything you deem to be of importance. You can post discussions and you can send interesting articles. You can also promote anything that you would like to promote to your group members.
The power of LinkedIn Groups and your particular LinkedIn group will begin to reveal itself as your business begins to grow geometrically in relation to how many different connections and members of the group you are able to attract.
